A public apology and a word of warning.

December 02 2010

Hi all. I've been on RHP before but under a couples profile (Shuttlez) but now I'm flying solo.First of all, I'd like to publicly apologise to another member here who i was recently having a conversation with on MSN.Here's where the warning bit comes in. Stupidly enough, I had logged in on a connection at a local cafe that was unsecure. Anyone and everyone could connect. During the conversation, someone else started writing comments using my login. Someone sitting near the cafe had used a program called a packet sniffer and was able to get my password for MSN. They had logged in using my details on the internet and then proceded to say some very unflattering things to the person I was talking to.Needles to say, they did not take it well thinking I was using them for some unflattering things. There is now really nothing I can say as that person does not want to talk to me anymore because of these idiots. I have apologised but there you go. It sucks but I understand where they are coming from and I cannot blame them for feeling that way.All I can say is please be careful if you are accessing ANY website or chat from a cafe, airport, hotel etc.I've learnt my lesson by getting my fingers badly burnt (they even locked me out of my RHP account until the Help Desk helped me get control back) and now, after some research, use a program to make things a little more secure. It's called Sheilds Up, if you want to know but please learn from my misfortune and I really hope the same doesn't happen to anyone else.QLH454 (Fromerly ShuttleZ)

Sounds like a fetish of a different kind. :pNeedless to say, how do you know they were using that technique and not a key logger? How do you load "Shields Up" on an internet Cafe PC?I hate PC's!HugsGaz

Hey Tassie! It's good to hear from you again. Don't be sorry that I'm flying solo, please. These things happen. It's just life and as for being forgiven? I don't and can't expect to be. What will happen, will happen. I can't dwell upon it. To use and old expression, all I can do is set my eyes on the horizon and keep sailing on. Let the past be the past and keep having fun. It's all good. :-)

I don't get it - how do people do it? And can they get access to your email if you just log on at home??

Hey Stalky, I work in IT and "sheilds up" is not a program and you can't load it. It is a site that examines your PC and shows you where your vulnerabilities are and gives advice on how to lock your system down.Best practice is get a good firewall, Antivirus, malware detector and rootkit detector.Yes I did say "Rootkit" and it's not a briefcase full of toys.Cheers,.

Techno whatever showing up here in me but a word to be sure that is wise? All of those P2P and related connections that offer a "chat" option, including some of those wonderful torrent tools used to exchange music...are by far and away the weakest of the weak link in the chain. A talking monkey could pop up in your account and would not even have to have many skills to do it. If you want a good laugh...google a bit about the security in MySpace. No batteries requried and the software is free with instructional videos. | Keep your firewalls and malware security up and up to date. Take the time to learn what you are doing before you do it. Sounds familiar doesn't it? | This has been an unsolicitied public service announcement.

Quoting 'Meeka100' I don't get it - how do people do it? And can they get access to your email if you just log on at home?? its actually a virus using proforma questions that has attached itself to your account...if you are lucky enough to have friends that recognise your style and know how you conduct yourself online then they will notify you there is something wrong with your account NOT open the suspect email (thus not infecting their own comp) and tell you whats happening....clearly our Reptilian friend has such people on his lists....these viruses actually send out emails in bulk - another clue if the person NEVER sends emails to you as part of a group mail out and often have NO subject heading....I just delete anything that comes into my account without a subject heading from anyone then tell them this has occured.... there are many ways to comprise an account. A Few tips for you all - and I hope RHP won't mind this comment. Avoid using free public wifi connections with your own laptops. Avoid using public internet computer from internet cafe's - they can often have keyloggers on them that can capture far more than you realise. Do NOT use the same password for other accounts or other websites - that way you limit what can be comprimised. Do NOT use the same security question or answer for all sites either - as if your profile is hacked they might gain access to more information that you want. ShieldsUP is a firewall checker - so that tells me that QLH454 had no firewall on the computer - easy to gain access to. Should not have been HIS problem though as it was the Internet Cafe's responsibility. Be paranoid - the bad guys ARE out to get you - unfortunately. Wayne

How do you load "Shields Up" on an internet Cafe PC?I hate PC's!HugsGaz Hey Stalky. I believe that what you are talking about is called Hotspot Shield. And Niceguy, part of my work is actually network security. Yes, the irony is killing me. To cut a long story short, i found out that these little brats where using an add on for Firefox called Firesheep that traps Facebook, msn, etc logins and all they need to do is double click and icon. That's it. makes me want to take a heavy, blunt object to whoever wrote the thing.Good news is, some helpful, bright spark wrote another add on called Blacksheep that tells you if someone is running Firesheep on the same network. After talking to some friends and some testing of my own, I found out that all you need to do is secure the network with a password. For the nerds, you need at least WPA and either AES or TKIP encryption. The better option is WPA2 with AES. WEP networks will still allow Firesheep to run and if you have a WEP secured network, please smack yourself. I donated some of my time (pro-bono) and locked down my favorite cafe's network so my indignity doesn;t happen to anyone else.(I hope RHP doesn't mind but I'd like to plug this Cafe - Mars Hill Cafe in Parramatta. They are a not-for-profit organisation that helps train and provide skills to the long term unemployed or for those people who normally wouldn't be able to get a job. Everyone who works there donates their time for free and they need some help so come in. GOOOOOD coffee)

I know many people in "network IT security"... and at a recent conference I attended in the US watched a mate of mine break the entire conference network in 20mins... when I say break... I mean hack... this was before firesheep was "out there". Scarey thing was that this was not a security conference... Long story short - if you don't want it "out there" don't put it on the net :-) Glad you helped out though mate - always good to provide some community service. Wayne

It's not that hard to learn, Wayne. That's the ridiculous side of this story. Starting with the basics of networking, you can cause a terrible amount of damage quite unintentionally. It is the serious troublemakers that make my job that much harder. Just like if a car thief REALLY wants your car, there is not much you can do about it. Network Security is the same. All you can do is to make it as hard and unattractive as possible to get in the network so they go look for an easier target. Tools like Firesheep are developed to demonstrate some weakness first and foremost. Unfortunately, no thought of the consequences after releasing it into the "wild" is usually given and they end up causing all sorts of headaches for those who's job is to make sure that things don't break in the first place. And Focus? It's all in the fingers. VERY dexterous fingers.
