A plea to the RHP Admins

December 31 2011

Having recently come back to the fold here, I am dismayed that the forum has not matured in the months I have been away. I would like to suggest the following amendments be made that will not only make these forums a more enjoyable place to post our thoughts, our humour and even our gripes but should hopefully make you, the Admins, task easier:1. Please, get rid of the delay in posts appearing. We are all adults here and sometimes, due to the delay in the posts appearing they seem either out of context, out of date or look as though we are just repeating what others have said. If our posts did appear without the delay the threads will hopefully seem more coherent and less repetitious.2. Give us the ability to edit and delete our own posts. The number of items I have hit the 'go' button and eventually the post appears in the thread only for me to find that I made some glaring spelling mistake or similar. As happens on the majority of forums, a simple line at the bottom can show if the post has been edited and when the edit was effected. These two relatively simple changes to the forums I think would greatly benefit the community. If you, as the Admins are worried about inappropriate threads being started without your oversight first, there is the report button. Knowing some of the regulars here, you can be assured that if that happens the post will be reported quick quickly. The same goes for a post in an existing thread, once it has been reported you can then adjudicate on whether the post is appropriate or not.I would be keen to hear both the thoughts of the Admins and those of the forum community on these suggested changes.mooka

Hi Mooka,Thank you for your post. The points you have raised are certainly not new ones and they have been discussed amongst RHP staff for a good number of years. Why those two points aren't being realised in Forums are as follows:1. Instant posting means that people can say whatever they wish without moderation. Yes, the good majority of posters are lovely, intelligent, respectful adults but sadly there is a minority of posters who are not. We have moderated things that should not be read by the decent folk of RHP and unless we choose to have outsourced workers moderating 24/7, we are not content to leave the forums to chance at 3am in the morning when someone decides to post an ex-girlfriend's address online. Yes, we can find out who did it and yes, we can take action, but we'd rather not deal with the ensuing headache. Until such time we are satisfied that individual posters fall into the above category of lovely, intelligent, respectful adults, we will continue to moderate posts.2. I think this has been discussed in a sticky but our opinion is that you should think before you post. Editing just means you can say something downright nasty, edit it an hour later but we still have to deal with the abuse reports anyway, only we have to try and recover what was said originally. We may look at allowing some such features to be made available to some users but I think if you've committed to comment, you should probably wear the outcome. We are more than happy to manually remove or edit posts deemed offensive but sorry, we won't do the spell check :|
