A place you never thought you would be?

July 18 2010

I LURVE travelling and take every opportunity to travel when ever I can. Have you ever been to a place that blew you away - a place you never thought you would ever be??? For me it was probably when I was in Jerusalem, Israel - not sure why but I thought it was completely amazing. And also Base Camp Mount Everest - the last place I ever expected to go! Truly amazing ! Sounds amazing Mikle - my kind of travelling for sure. Last year I went to Cambodia to see Ankor Wat a place I had always wanted to see. Just went on my own and met the most amazing people in Cambodia. It is still such a poor country but the people were so beautiful and amazing even though most go through terrible hardships everyday. Thats why I love travelling - you meet the most amazing people and see the most amazing things but in a lot of ways it also reminds me how lucky I am and how much I love Australia.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd ever get to explore inside those famous gates! I have been to the US four times...seen quite a few cities & New York & Los Angeles are just the most amazing places and I'd live there in a heartbeat. But on our last trip in June this year we took our daughters (21 & 18)..the eldest is just crazy about the TV show "Girls of the Playboy Mansion" and cos this trip was for her 21st B'day we thought it'd be great if we could get her to meet any of the show's stars? So...we wrote a letter to Hugh Hefner...yeah!! a zillion to one shot we thought! Long story short..when there we get a phone call from Hef's assistant. She says they liked our letter and invited us for a tour. Didn't get inside the main house (reserved for Hef's closest people) but we toured all the grounds which included the gardens, Hef's private zoo, the pool area & famous grotto, tennis courts, bathhouse & Hef's games room & we did the entire circuit around the mansion. We took about 100 photos! We were told only about 20 people per year get these tours..and they are usually bought at charity auction events. When I asked why us? We were told simply cos they liked our letter!!! Ahhh...now how do we get invited to one of those mansion parties??? Hmmmmm.....

Thanks for this topic, Meeka, it's great to reminisce! In 1990 I spent a couple of months in India, mainly in the foothills of the Himalaya. I had bartered for a motorbike for a week or so from one of the locals and it kept breaking down! As I pushed it into a little village one night, an old man indicated that I should follow him and he took me to his nephew's home. He was the headmaster of the local school and me being a teacher, we got on famously! He and his family were the most beautiful people I have ever met. So gracious and accomodating. We stayed there the night and again a week later. They pt on a feast for us one day when we didn't even realise it was a holy day for them and they couldn't eat! Very embarrassing and a great lesson. They fixed our bike and took us to their school, 300 students sitting on the floor with 3 teachers, 100 to a room! They were so proud to show us their English skills! An enduring memory that has stood me in good stead and reminded me about how lucky we are and how precious life is. Thanks Meeka. David X

Our favorite is Thailand... beautifull country... beautifull islands and beautifull people.. Then when the sun goes down my fav is Patong ... has to be one of the most liberated places on the planet.. Anyone planning a visit must go to Bangla Road... You will never be the same again.. Affordable' living 'eating ' cheap as chips... We both first went in april last year and I (mr JJ ) had 2 business/ pleasure visits there since.. Already we're planning another trip next year...

I've stood on the ruins of Inca temples in mexico... was nearly shot by the French Military at the Eiffel tower... had a private tour of Stonehenge where I touched the rocks... I want to see the Galapagos Islands with my son - it's something he would love to go visit... I'd love to also be in bed with 3 gorgeous women too... ;-) all to myself... hugs Wayne x

Got sent to Ho-Chi-Minh City for work a few years ago. This being my first OS experience I was terrified - had no idea what to expect and here I was about to be dumped in a a foreign country I had little knowledge of and had no understanding of the language. Despite the pollution and poverty evident in some places I ended up absolutely loving the city and it's beautiful people. Not too sure about the Tranny's on scooters at night though.... I'd go back on a holiday in a heartbeat, and probably take the family along to see how "the other half" lives.

I received a phone call from my best friend after she had come back from her 2nd trip to Australia to be told they were going to emigrate out here, before i knew what i was saying, the reply from me was 'do you want us to come with you?', I shouted through to my husband who was sat on the sofa at the time 'is it all right if we move to Australia?' he replied 'yes why not and 6 months later here i was with hubby, 2 very young children and 5 suitcases in Brisbane airport, with no where to live and only the stuff in the suitcases as everything else was still waiting to be shipped from the UK, and now we are residents and have never looked back, 3 years and counting
