2021 Census & LGBTQIA+

August 10 2021

How disappointing is this copied and pasted article by Amnesty International that LGBTQIA+ people and their needs were not represented for future needs by the 2021 census question for gender identity? "22 July 2021 Amnesty International has written to Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar MP to convey our dismay over the Australian Government’s decision to not included questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in Census 2021. Census 2021 is the Australian Government’s key opportunity to understand what the community needs – particularly in relation to health and mental health services, education, and community and social services. As a result of this decision, the Government cannot understand the needs of LGBTQIA+ people, and the community will miss out on vital services, simply because of their sexual orientation, gender identity and variations of sex characteristics. This is a matter of serious concern, as it will result in a service gap that constitutes discrimination of the LGBTQIA+ community. Every person is born free and equal in dignity and rights and is entitled to the rights and freedoms in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights without distinction of any kind. With special consideration on the Principles on the Application of International Human Rights Law in Relation to Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (the ‘Yogyakarta Principles’), it is essential that Governments acknowledge that sexual orientation, gender identity and variations of sex characteristics are integral to every person’s dignity and humanity and must not be the basis of discrimination or abuse. Most LGBTQIA+ Australians will have a horror story about not being able to access health and mental health services, education, and community and social services. Research indicates that LGBTQIA+ people are more likely to experience discrimination, bullying and abuse and are significantly more at risk of suicide, self-harm and mental health impacts as a result. Yet without the necessary data to steer service delivery, the Government cannot ensure the LGBTQIA+ community have access to required services, ensuring that human rights are enjoyed without discrimination."

It's a missed opportunity too as we'll be seeing a massive change in identities over the decades. It's a real shame.

There’s a lot they miss, surely nobody’s foolish enough to think the government actually does a census because they care about and want to provide for the people anymore? Lol I bet they don’t ask anything about the needs of people who wish to leave society either, because they simply don’t care about people or the skyrocketing suicide rate. As a country we have MUCH bigger issues than gender right now.

Yep, they only ask questions that matter to men in suits! Or for that matter ones that they give a shit about! My guess is they still only believe that 3% of the community is LGBTQIA+, but then again, how do you know when you don’t ask the questions in the census? The thoughts on how useless the religion question is without any context is an interesting one. Can we put ENM down🤔

No surprises here. But the fact it's being questioned and discussed is the most important part.

Just to go on a bit of a tangent as I do sometimes…I filled out the census…I wasn’t at home therefore leaving nobody there, except the random security patrols; and it just gave me a reference number, thanked me after entering the address etc and that was it…. Now my question is…. If it’s honestly about gathering information regarding services etc and I’m not say it isn’t about that; but why does one have to be physically at home in order for them to gain the information they require?? Surely the information isn’t any different ??
