An “insane” dress detail that left the underside of a Brisbane influencer’s backside exposed has divided the internet – with many wondering whether “butt cleavage” could be the next big thing in fashion.

While we’re well accustomed by now to displays of underboob and G-string pants, skirts and dresses – championed by the likes of Hailey Bieber and her then-controversial 2019 Met Gala gown – this latest item of clothing has some questioning if the cut-out trend has finally gone too far.

The $48 dress, modelled by Sarah Louise on Tuesday in a sponsored Instagram post for online fast fashion retailer PrettyLittleThing, looks normal enough from the front.

From the back, however, a series of intricate ties leave little to the imagination – exposing Sarah’s shoulders, back, legs and the underside of her bum – and creating the kind “under-butt cleavage” effect usually only exhibited when wearing hotpants.

While dozens of the Queensland model’s 101,000 followers declared that they were “obsessed” with the outfit and that she looked “next level”, the trend has left others divided in the past.

Last November, Rihanna made headlines when she embraced “butt cleavage” – raising eyebrows when she modelled several looks from her Savage X Fenty lingerie line in a series of Instagram Stories.

Posing in a pair of seemingly normal blue plaid shorts with a lace waistband, the singer then turned to debut that they actually featured a similarly chaotic cutout over her backside.

The cheeky detail was accompanied by an adjustable tie from behind.

In June, similar chaos ensued when a pair of Savage X Fenty leggings – intended to be worn to bed – that offered little to no coverage over the backside went viral on TikTok.

First shared by a user named @fathermarge, who later removed the clip, the lilac leggings, which feature a large cut-out in the back with lace-up detailing, garnered plenty of comments from perplexed users.

While some declared we should “normalise butt cleavage” and others said the trend was “sexy”, the overwhelming majority did not agree.

“This is where I draw the line,” one TikTok user commented, while another simply wrote, “Oh HELL no.”

Twitter users were similarly unimpressed by the borderline crotchless bottoms, with one person declaring they were “idiotic” and “not practical”.

“I love Rihanna, but these Fenty gym leggings are trash,” another wrote.

“These bum-cleavage Savage X Fenty leggings are making me want a refund on being alive,” tweeted a third, while another said, “I thought this was called plumber’s crack.”

As a guy who likes Women’s butts seeing more of them is appealing. Whether butt “cleavage” is trashy or not is another thing. A form fitting thin material dress is ultimately trying to show off the body that is in it. Cut outs more so. I personally feel that it’s not high fashion and definitely will challenge some because it flaunts the person in it provoking reaction, mine being appreciative.
