We're Having Sex Longer!

You’ve heard it, you’ve read it, hell - you’re living it. Thirty is the new twenty, forty is the new thirty, fifty is the new forty, and so on and so on. You see we humans are aging ever more gracefully and our rigs are holding up to the strains of modern life with increasing efficiency with the release of every new skin cream and vitamin supplement.

We’re living longer and we’re living better but how is that effecting us on a sexual level? Well when you think back, society has always relegated sex and sexuality to the realm of society’s young folk. Our sexual iconography has always worshipped at the young, tight altars of firm flesh but in today’s ‘get some’ world everyone is coming to the party sans inhibitions!

Senior sexuality is being dragged into the public eye by the grey brigade and the sounds of hot young things cringing can be heard around the world, but you know what – tough!

For the purposes of this article we’re using the term senior to describe anyone post forty, just to separate the young trendys and everyone else. The mature sex market is a massive and untapped field for the most part. The culture, the lifestyles, the players have traditionally been found on the fringes on popular media, if found at all, but now we’re acknowledging the post fifty sex life and it looks to be a pretty rockin’ bash.

At sites like RedHotPie we’re seeing the re-invigoration of sexuality in the more mature circles. Married couples are out there looking to spice up their bedroom adventures after years focusing on families and careers. Divorcees are discovering that in today’s society there’s no need to move straight into social recluse mode after the break-up of a long term relationship, they’re hitting the single’s scene again and revelling in the fun they last experienced years before. And there is an increasing section of mature singles, happy to enjoy their journey solo, experiencing casual friends and partners and basically embracing the kind of lifestyle that has for so long been exclusively enjoyed by the twentysomethings.

Of course it’s not all orgasm chasing, inhibition losing, free love for everyone all the time; there are a few detours and potholes on the way to sexual nirvana as we head toward our twilight years.

Being the flawed machines that we are our hardware changes with age. This will affect everything from sleeping and eating patterns, personality characteristics and our sexual responses. Decreased estrogen levels in women during menopause is quite often linked with decreased levels of sexual response and libido. Women can experience less lubrication and sensation as well as finding orgasm increasingly difficult to reach. Today however, there are numerous treatments for these effects and women are rocking into their senior years with a vigour their mothers would have most likely killed for.

The gents don’t escape failing tackle either, many fellas will have felt the disappointment of the flaccid dangle, the non-arrival of the party’s most important guest. Erectile dysfunction in older men is quite often a simple case of decreased blood flow in the body. However, as just about everyone on the planet is aware, modern medicine has taken care of that little problem. Drop a pill and raise flagpole, it’s a simple answer to a problem that has dogged mankind throughout the ages!

There are of course numerous health afflictions that will hinder our ability to practice and enjoy sex in our later years but as the general fitness of our mature population increases so does their sex lives. The best thing about this grey dawn is the self perpetuating nature of this sexy scenario. Sex is a great way to stay in shape, it’s a stress reducer and it allows for a real and hopefully lasting connection between humans; in short – have more sex and you’ll be healthier… be healthier and you’ll have more sex! How good is that?

Will any of us watch those Matlock and Golden Girls repeats in the same light again? I think not!
