Adults are having less sex than 20 years ago: study

It's time to drop trou and get down! We're all about sexy times here at RedHotPie, which is why we were shocked to hear that millennials are having less sex than their grandparents did - and they believe it’s because they are spending too long on Facebook or watching porn.

Adults are having sex eight times less a year than they did a decade ago. People had sex on average 62 times a year between 2000 and 2004. But these encounters fell to just 54 times a year between 2010 and 2014. And while people in their 20s and 30s are having less sex than older generations did, married couples have seen their sex lives fizzle out faster than those who are single.

Researchers said the increased availability of social media, computer games and porn has given people other “pleasurable options”. And kids are staying at home longer, preventing them getting intimate.

Meanwhile people are tying the knot later in life — at a time when they are less likely to have sex.

Professor Jean Twenge, who led the study at San Diego State University, said: “The ubiquity of entertainment and social media options in recent decades, from streaming video to gaming to Facebook, may also make sexual activity just one of an array of pleasurable options.

“In addition, the increased availability and consumption of pornography may provide sexual outlets outside of sex with a partner.

“Despite their reputation for hooking up, Millennials and the generation after them — known as iGen or Generation Z — are actually having sex less often than their parents and grandparents did when they were young.

“That’s partially because fewer iGen’ers and Millennials have steady partners.”

Married folk had sex an average of once a week — or 51 times a year — between 2010 and 2014 — down 16 times on the previous period. But those who were single saw their tally fall by just four, to 33 times a year — despite a rise in internet dating and one night stands. The researchers also found people who worked full time had more sex than those who worked fewer hours, or were unemployed.  And people in their 20s have sex more than 80 times a year. That figure falls to 60 times a year by the age of 45, and 20 times a year by the age of 65.

The researchers examined data on the sex lives of 26,000 Americans since 1989.

The findings are published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour.
